Angie Gaiotti Coolidge '79 Memorial Golf Tournament

Burr and Burton Academy¹s Booster Club will hold its third annual Angie
Gaiotti Coolidge '79 Memorial Golf Tournament on Sunday, May 21, 2006, at
the Gleneagles Golf Course in Manchester There will be a 9 am shotgun start.


Proceeds from the golf tournament go to support Burr and Burton¹s athletic
programs and the young athletes. The proceeds from past tournaments were
used to purchase of the fitness equipment (in Angie¹s memory) in Burr and
Burtons¹ new fitness center. Prizes will be awarded for Closest To The Pin,
Longest Drive , and Hole in One.


Hole Sponsors, cart sponsors and items for the auction are welcome.

Summer Sports Camps

Burr and Burton Academy is offering eight sports camps this summer during
July. One-week sessions in boys and girls lacrosse will be held July 17 ­
July 21 from 8:30 am to 12:30 pm. The boys camp, coached by BBA Varsity
Coach Sam Johnson, is for players entering grades 3-8. The girls camp,
directed by BBA Varsity Coach Dave Miceli, is open to players entering
grades 3 through 9.

BBA Varsity Coach Matt Kujovsky is directing the Football Camp the week of
July 10-14 for players entering grades 4 through 9. The camp runs from 8:30
am until noon. The Baseball Camp. directed by veteran youth coach Gary
Grabarz, runs the same week from 12:30 pm until 4 pm. Players who attend
both receive a 10 percent discount on the camp fee.

BBA Varsity Coach Barb Miceli heads up the Dance Camp for boys and girls
entering grades 5 through 9 the week of July 17 - July 21 from 8:30 am to
12:30 pm. The Field Hockey Camp, directed by BBA Varsity Coach Julie McGraw
for players entering grades 6 through 9, will be held July 17-21 from 8:30
am until noon.

BBA Head Coach Jamie Briggs is directing the Basketball Camp for boys and
girls entering grades 6 through 8 the week of July 10-14 from 8:30 am until
noon.BBA alum Brooke Page Rosenbauer heads up the Soccer Camp for boys and
girls entering grades 5 through 9 July 24 -28 from 8:30 am until noon.

The fee for all camps is $130 before May 15, and $140 after that date.

  • If you are interested in signing up for the summer Driver’s Ed. course offered by Burr and Burton, please see Sue Towslee in the main office.  The classes run from June 15th-July 7th  from 8am-10am with driving time to be completed before July 28th.  Classroom attendance is mandatory!
  • There is an important meeting of the cartoonist club this Friday after school in Mr. Nicholson’s classroom.  The meeting will last about twenty minutes.  Any interested artists are welcome. 
  • On Thursday, April 27, there will be a Refuse to Use event that will count as 1 credit towards the 2006-2007 season.  “Thank you for smoking” will be at the Village Picture Shows at 6:30-7:00 there will be free giveaways and at 7:00 the movie begins.  Adults will be charged regular admission Students will get in free with a voucher that can be picked up from Tracy Hughes in the health clinic.
  • Dance Team – Anyone planning to try out for Dance Team next winter, if you did not get information from Barb after assembly on Monday, you must see her this week to get information about summer camps!
  • Any student interested in attending a VT Fish and Wildlife Conservation Camp should see Mr. Anton for more information and application

Community Poetry Reading

There will be a community poetry reading tomorrow evening (Thursday April
27), 7:00 , at The Mark Skinner Library. Faculty and students are invited to
attend this event and read a favorite poem of their favorite author or a
poem they have written. Thanks to the librarians at The Mark Skinner, last
year¹s event helped build community spirit through simply listening to other
people sharing poems. Come participate in the warmth of this very special
event!

Swim Team Sign Up

Manchester Triton Swim Team will hold a mandatory informational meeting and sign-ups on Wednesday, May 3 at Manchester Elementary • Middle School cafeteria from 6:00 – 7:30 pm. Anyone aged 6-18 who is interested in swimming for the team this summer is urged to attend. Try on new team suit and get psyched for a great season! New evening practice hours will be available this year. Come join a group of dedicated swimmers who compete against themselves, and as a team, in weekly meets culminating in the state championship meet.

    1. Tuesday 4/11/06: “Town Hall Meeting” is scheduled for Tuesday, April 11 from 6:30 – 8:00 pm at Long Trail School in Dorset. This event is open to all Northshire parents, community members and youth who are interested in discussing and planning ways to address the issue of underage alcohol abuse.  The Northshire Community Coalition is one of over 1500 communities nationwide that are holding “Town Hall Meetings” to alert the community to new research on the risks of underage drinking and empower the community to take action to stop it.
    2. Wednesday 4/12/06: Informal Question & Answer with VT Department of Liquor Control.  Jason Elmer, an investigator with the VT Department of Liquor Control, will be on hand during all three lunches , in the cafeteria, to answer any questions students may have about alcohol laws and related issues.  Educate yourself and make choices that work for you and your life.

Graduation Speaker Announced

John McCardell, former president of Middlebury College and well-respected
historian, will give the keynote address to the Class of 2006 at
commencement ceremonies on Friday, June 9.


Dr. McCardell stepped down as president in June 2004 after leading
Middlebury College for thirteen years. During his tenure, Middlebury
attained national and international prominence as a leading liberal arts
college. He also guided the college through two record-breaking capital
campaigns which enabled the college to add many new facilities. In 2000 Dr.
McCardell was named Vermonter of the Year. He returned to Middlebury last
fall as a professor of history.


Commencement ceremonies will take place on Friday, June 9, at 5:30 pm at the
school.

  • CALLING ALL ARTISTS: The Vermont Department of Health is sponsoring a poster contest for Alcohol Awareness Month in April.  The posters should reflect how alcohol is portrayed in movies, music and television and the damaging effects of this portrayal on youth.  Prizes include iPODS and cash.  Completed posters must be turned in by April 13th.  Information about the contest is available through Tracy Hughes, in the Health Clinic and Mrs. Hubner in the Art Department
