  • Since its founding in 1949, the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society has invested $483 million in cancer research.  Society-funded research has produced new treatments to enhance and prolong lives.  Innovations in cancer treatment over the years have included radiation and chemotherapy, stem call transplantation and new targeted therapies that kill cancer cells without harming normal ones.
  •  A new treatment for one form of leukemia (chronic myelogenous leukemia) is making headlines.  The drug, Gleevec, has completely changed the course of treatment from chemotherapy and a potential bone marrow transplant to simply taking a pill once a day.  The new medication has few side effects and is producing prolonged remissions for those taking it.  It has remained effective for patients over the course of five years, but it is a new drug and long-term survival statistics are not yet available.  It is a very important new agent and is being tested for other forms of cancer as well.
